La ruta del guero

Week two in Mexico. First few days we spent in Mexico City with Lu's family ... they had a big party. We also hit the museums, downtown, and went to a cool play in a small theater ("Estas ahi?") about living in an apartment with the ghost of your girlfriend and another random ghost. It's hard to expleen. We then hit ruins in Palenque before going 4 days to Tulum on the Mayan Riviera in a little beach bungalow w/ no AC owned by a couple we met at the ruins. Very beautiful ... we were right where they're about to shoot one of those Corona "miles away from ordinary" commercials. And yes, I did have beers while lying in the hammock, looking at the water. From there we hit the ruins in Chichen Itza, then a day in Merida before escaping the Yucatan peninsula just ahead of Hurricane Emily. Today we're back in Chiapas, in San Cristobal de las Casas, which is bu-tee-ful. Just hit some caves and hithiked back to town. On to Oaxaca province probably tommorrow. Our host in Tulum was very interesting ... a French guy from Strousberg (sp?) who's views might fit better on Mister Kurtz ... justifying child labor and implying anyone could retire to the Caribbean in their 30s if they worked a little was pushing it. One night hanging with him was enough, but he did show us how to make a bug reppellant out of an old coconut. Mayan secret. Passed directly to him I'm sure. Our movie in the bus last night was hilarious and scary ... some sort of pro-American military propaganda called "Air Strike" where a fictional "Petrovia" is attacked by patriotic Americans after Sept 11th ... there is some VERY dark humor to be enjoyed in watching this. Watch Michigan-Militia guys be welcomed as liberators, then twirl stripper-esque Petrovian women around the dance floor. Unbelievable. Gotta run.
