So today I'm explaining the difference between preterite & imperfect using the example that both "sabía" and "supo" might be used to indicate that a person knew bananas were on aisle 3, depending on whether it's an already-known-fact or something being discovered. Then I get a student's question, "So if I use supo instead of sabía, the bananas are on aisle 5?"
Classic.
I also had fun with using Adam and Eve to explain the difference between (1) it not having been wise to do something in the past ("no debía comer la fruta," before the fall) and (2) it not being wise, but you went and did it anyway (no debió comer la fruta, after the fall).
